The Lighthouse Guild (LG) provides people with vision loss services to attain their goals through a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach. This includes a health care center providing medical services and vision rehabilitation. With the growth of assistive technology, LG opened a new technology center in March of 2022.
As reported by the National Eye Institute, it is anticipated that the number of people in the United States with visual impairment will double by the year 2050. As such, more attention is being given to assistive technology by the people who use it as well as developers and manufacturers. Whether the technology is low or high-tech, a mainstream or stand-alone device, its purpose is to provide individuals access to meet their goals and improve their quality of life. With the abundance of technology available and individualized goals, a proper assessment is advantageous versus an over-the-counter model, which diminishes the risk of technology abandonment.
