U.S. Federal Judge Rules for Walmart, against Blind Shoppers, in Self-checkout Kiosk Case

This is an article about a judge’s Opinion in a federal court case in the United States. The case was filed against Walmart by blind shoppers and two blind organizations. The case was filed because the company’s self-checkout system cannot be independently used by blind people. The case started when two blind people had money stolen from them by a Walmart employee who was supposed to help them use the machine that was not accessible. The judge said Walmart was not required to make the self-checkout system usable by blind people. The Opinion was written by a Judge in Maryland and does not mean other judges have to decide the same way. It might be appealed to a different Court. The Opinion only applies to retail technology. The judge recognized that voting systems need to be accessible because blind people have a right to cast a private ballot.
