Texas agencies, universities required to meet new digital accessibility standards by April 2020

Like many states, Texas has adopted federal accessibility standards for state agencies and public universities to follow for new and updated digital assets, defined in code as electronic information resources. In October 2019, the Texas Department of Information Resources adopted further changes to sections of the Texas Administrative Code (§206 and §213) defining these accessibility requirements, which instructs state agencies and institutions of higher education to move to the new US Section 508 Technical standards (WCAG 2.0, Level AA) as well as other provisions, with a deadline of April 18, 2020.

Do you know what digital assets fall under the EIR definition?

Keep in mind, the need for digital accessibility affects the following technologies and other digital assets under the EIR definition:

  • Websites
  • Documents and PowerPoint Presentations
  • Online Forms
  • Learning Management Systems
  • Mobile applications
  • Audio/Video multimedia resources
  • IT Products and Services Procurement
  • And virtually anything accessed using IT

This is so all Texans, including those with disabilities, can access your organization’s information and services.
