Microsoft and Be My Eyes have come together to build more inclusive AI models.

Earlier this month, Microsoft and Be My Eyes announced a partnership that sees the two companies banding together to make AI models more inclusive of Blind and low vision people. Microsoft’s chief accessibility officer Jenny Lay-Flurrie wrote about the news in a blog post, saying the collaboration will ultimately benefit some 340 million people today.

Flurrie wrote AI models “requires large amounts of data for training and utility,” but as others have observed, “too often disability is underrepresented or incorrectly categorized in datasets.” Flurrie also noted this so-called “disability data desert” sorely “[limits] the utility of a technology [and] strengthens existing stereotypes and magnify bias.” As there are rich opportunities to be had for artificial intelligence and accessibility, Flurrie said gathering inclusive data via partnerships like with Be My Eyes are “paramount” to making representative AI models.
