Over two decades, steady progress has been made in underscoring the needs of those living with a disability.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 has been instrumental in putting an emphasis on the need for accommodating those with a disability, however it is the work of nonprofit organizations such as the Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living that advocate and provide dedicated resources on a local level.

The center is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year and executive director Christina Holtzclaw said the work continues to empower and support independent living for those in the Northwest Georgia area — which covers 15 counties including Floyd, Polk, Bartow, Gordon and Chattooga.

“We try to make sure people have access to things,” Holtzclaw said.

The center began in Rome on Jan. 4, 2004 and has grown both in staff and in programs and services [...]
