Provide ways for users to turn time limits off
no. 040
Make sure users can turn off time limits whenever they need more time to complete a task
People with disabilities such as blindness, low vision, dexterity impairments, and cognitive limitations may require more time to read content or to perform functions such as filling out on-line forms. Making sure they have control over the allocated time limit for any given task, and are provided with the freedom to turn off the actual time limit can make the difference between successfully performing the required action or not.
To do so, simply provide an easily found mechanism at or near the top of the page that allows users who cannot complete tasks within a specified time limit to turn off the time limit. Of course, it is essential that the mechanism for turning off the time limit can be completed without a time limit itself and before the time limit for the page expires. Designing functions that are not time-dependent will help people with disabilities succeed at completing these functions.
